Shall We Agree to Disagree?
I'm running out of time, so am only going to respond to a few of your comments to my comments to your comments. . . .
I've had many conversations with a psychiatric nurse whom I love and respect (and who happens to be a to the core Dem). She has a son with schizophrenia who, last I heard, was working part time, taking his meds and doing well. I actually do agree with you that, in the case of mental health disorders, there needs to be life long support. These are not diseases one can simply overcome using mind over matter. My comment about welfare was directed towards those who are sound in body and mind, but just need some temporary help to get them back on their feet. That assistance should not be permenent.
Regarding those verses from Acts 4:34-35, similar events have been seen over time as the Church has spread to different parts of the world and people have worked together and shared together of their resources. The verse is certainly NOT preaching communism, where everything is held in common with the proletariat (which, as we know, never worked). The sharing that occurred took place "from time to time," when there were needs "and it was distributed to anyone as he had need." It was not coerced giving. If anything, it is how the wealthy should care for those in their community today who have needs -- but without being forced to give up half of their income to taxes. And in all honesty, it is what I have witnessed here in my own town a time or two. Not often enough, for sure, but at least it's happening.
