Great post
and great comments. I could have the best solution: My husband is retired, so he does the laundry. Seriously, your system sounds great, especially for people with kids still at home. In past times, I did the load a day thing; we've done the each child (from age 10 or 11 on up) does their own laundry (with training); and the everything-on-Thursday-night method. This was when I worked at a place where we had casual dress (jeans and t-shirts or sweatshirts) on Friday. I watched TV downstairs or played Nintendo while the laundry was going, and then didn't have to worry about having clothes ready for the following week.

Problem was...
because it was so mindless, I never did it ... or never did it to completion. I'd have piles of dirty clothes waiting to be washed...clothes that mildewed in the washer because I forgot they were in there....piles of clean clothes on the sofas and beds....six-months' worth of ironing stacked in the rocker....a year's worth of mending on top of the sewing machine....
I hated laundry because it was so damn boring and it took for-freaking-ever to get done. When I decided something HAD to be done about the piles of clothes everywhere, I had to figure out why I hated it, and think up strategies to make it more interesting and challenging.

Lanudry Dementia
Now I know you are losing it. You spent way too much thought on how to do a mindless task. Next you'll be telliing me that if put my socks in a net bag they won't disappear.
