It's a defence mechanism. When they are faced with facts that actually make sense to them, it scares them, so they retaliate with the usual "that's the devil talking" or whatever. Yes, they are afraid of the facts, because with most fundamental religions if they accept that just ONE WORD in the bible is wrong, they have to accept that it may all be wrong, and their whole world would crumble. They're too scared to let that happen, so they deny the facts.

Kooka -
Facts just get in the way of good, solid indignation resulting from plain old insecurities about losing power.

you're
not alone, Kooka, G. James and I have found that the facts are a stumbling block that most christians prefer to go around and keep themselves ignorant of--thus we still have christianity, Islam and Judiasm today. Fear is the mechanism which keeps religion alive. I'll repost from Immorality of Christianity later today, you will see that reason succedes.
Peace,

Facts stand independent of belief. I love your line, "Too many believers are scared of facts that do not come from their church it would seem." I grew up in the Mormon church and I saw this happen repeatedly. Why is it that so many people prefer a foundation of fear rather than a foundation of fact?
