Canine,
you are most welcome...and I'm glad you decided to stay. Your words are anything but sophomoric, they are really great, so don't sell yourself short you hear!

Thanks for the kind words

You don't have any idea what your words meant to me. No, I am not a writer, but I DO love to write. That particular piece (Best Friends) I had never meant to show to a soul. For some reason I just had the feeling that I should share it. I sincerely hope that it helps someone. As for "BLOGIT STATISTIC" I would have been one. I had no intention of staying. My writing compared to those here is sophomoric. I never would have even found my way here except that I didn't know where else to put Best Friends. Thanks to your words and those of the others, I have decided to stick around for awhile. Thank you.

word.smith,

great comment. I think that's probably true of some, although I could see from the outset it wasn't a money maker. One only has to look at the top writers' earnings. And you're right, it is extremely tough in the beginning, many just give up without really trying.

I have always thought that Online Writer's Marketplace was an awful tagline for them to use, surely they could do better!! Many of us have talked about that before. One day I'm going to put on my marketing hat and brainstorm new taglines. Not that they'll take my advice, but I know I could come up with something better.

Quirky....
Some leave because they came looking for a true writing network. Blogit advertises itself in such a way that you think you'll make real money writing. That was what I was looking for when I came here, a serious network and a way to make some money, but I found a kind of 'all things to all people' setup. I made the adjustment, made friends, decided to stay and have fun. It must also be daunting to be one amongs thousands, but if you put a little work in, that can be overcome. Some adjust to Blogit, some don't.

Rachel,
The addiction probably either wore off or they purged it...or they're just more able to resist it--but yeah--why?? (and how?)

Quirkyalone
Thank you for that post. I am new and I am not sure what it will be like in a month or so but it is difficult right now. After you get some readers I guess it would not be so bad but in the beginning you find your posts listed back with those written April or even January. I am posted in seven categories and am getting very little reading. I have not learned how to work some things yet. My comments page remains full page if I use three sentences. I don't know how to get the photos off my own computer to add. It only gives instruction for getting them off the web. Just little things that take time. I am only a week or less into this. My first two post had incredibly hateful criticisims. That means everything is expected of the very new as the old timmer. Yet we have not learned to navigate. I don't know how to get the second post to go over the previous one on the same column yet. It is hard for a new one the first and second weeks. Thanks for asking. Justsouno

You're right!
We're all fully addicted and there isn't much that can be done to get us off of here--but why did the others not become addicted as well?!  That would be GREAT information for them to have!!  Great post, as usual!!

Rachel, they really should care.

I just edited my post and added this: From a marketing standpoint, it is much harder to attract new customers than service existing ones, so knowing why one gives up on you, is paramount to a profitable business.

It's true that right now there doesn't seem to be a shortage of new people coming in, but that may not last forever, so it's better to find ways to hang onto the customers you do have instead of relying on new ones to come.

posted by Julia. on October 17, 2004 at 5:13 PM | link to this | reply

Agreed.

Then again, maybe they don't care?  They know there are a handful of new customers coming in as the few old are trickling out...

Rachel,
Well I just think it would make good business sense to know why your customers are leaving.

Definately!
That WOULD be interesting!  I almost left after the first month.  Actually, I stopped coming around after about two weeks.  Then, I got suckered in!!

bea,
that is a very good approach. I agree, blogging should be fun. And as a hobby, it's quite inexpensive.

Vibrance,

It can be very difficult to get readers here, that is for sure. Hope you stick it out!

posted by Julia. on October 17, 2004 at 4:35 PM | link to this | reply

Witty,
I hope you will stick around. It can take a few months to actually start earning back your subscription. I just look at it as an inexpensive hobby. You've earned half the $6 so it only costs you $3--the question is not whether it's worth losing money for, but if the entertainment was worth spending $3 for.

I have been in and out for the past year
I have had several name changes so it probably looks like I join up then drop out. This is just a hobby for me. I don't expect to make money - this costs money, like any good hobby would. When it seems too much like work I stop and concentrate on my real life for awhile. Getting a life is good! Everyone should try it. I blog for several days to a week out of each month on the average. I am just now back after a three month absence. It just has to do with whether I am having fun or not. That's all. Nothing more mysterious than that.

good question
simple answer for me...hardly anyone reads my stuff...yet. Love...Vib

Today is the last day of my first month and I am undecided as to whether I am staying or not.  Due I'm sure mainly to commenting on a lot of blogs, mine rose quite quickly and practically all of them made it into the top 10 in their respective categories - one made it to no.1.  However, as of today I have only made $3.11 from all this.  In fact, someone actually emailed me and asked me why I'd made so little when my blogs were so high in the ratings.  Good question.  It's presumably because everyone who is reading me is also reading a lot of other people, so my percentage of their total is minimal.  I'm not in this for the money, but I'm not here to lose money either.  There are too many free blog sites to need to do that.  I was spending too much time here and I've had to cut it down, so my chances of making a profit are extremely low.  There are other considerations, too, but I think you'll find that's the main one with most people.  At the end of the day, is this site worth losing money for?

Quirky, I have the list and if you'd like you can purchase it on ebay. I may start my own company, listing all the wannabes and the scared little chickens and those who returned to their everyday, boring existence flipping coins and hamburgers. Also on the list are the few temps who left the network for the big house. And the White House.

food,
yeah I'm sure it is for many. We all want an audience or we'd be writing everything in our paper journals. And when you get readers but then go away for a week (I just got back from three weeks off, so I know)--many of those you thought were "faithful" have forgotten all about you.

posted by Julia. on October 16, 2004 at 8:23 PM | link to this | reply

I've often wondered that as well...
It is probably discouraging to try get any ratings going. I have been here a year and started to get in the top 25 in three or so of my blogs, but then I went on vacation for a week, and whammo, toilet city! Not that ratings matter (wink wink nod nod)but I'd bet the difficulty of getting ratings or even a comment or two is high on the list.

hi grouch!
You're right about the exit survey, but why couldn't there be a monthly posting of the new members who have joined? Like a "Welcome Newbies" list--yes Kay-Ren has something similar but not all in one place, with just the name so it's easy to see at a glance who has joined since last month. Hey, I'm gonna post that in community. Anyone who reads this comment and agrees that they would like to see this, stop by the community post and leave a comment!

best to ask blogit brian!
Ariala's One True Love here - i bet he could but stuff together -- though i imagine we would not really know the results of such an exit survey except how they might alter the way shaycom does its business. tg

Inn,
I agree. Any business needs to know why a "customer" leaves and doesn't intend to shop there anymore, but most dissatisfied customers never speak up to tell them.
