Try it once, you may get better at it. Just say No and offer no excuses. Maybe add a thank you after if she presses the issue. It works on the commercials.......(You could be thanking her for teaching you how to say no)

Sym, learn to say no. It was something that I had to learn the hard way.
Everyone at work knew that they could dump their work on me (and still got credit for it) because they knew that I couldn't say no. Someone who visited our office from another location actually sent me a book on how to say no, when they got back home!!!
It's not so hard to do, it is all in the doing and is very liberating in fact. Practice in front of the mirror. Say it aloud, over and over again until it is no longer foreign in your throat. No, NO, NO!

SYMPH - I can't believe she came and asked you for the cigarette back. LOL
Some people live their lives borrowing and not paying people back. I had a neighbor like that once. If it helps any, I could never say "NO" either. I gave her and her kids everything they asked for and never got anything repaid. I just counted it loss from the get go so I wouldn't be feeling bad about them.

OR
make up a list of all the things that she sponged off of you. Write it in big bold print. Put the word "Bill" at the top and give it to her. Tell her that untill she retrrns everything on this list - she has reached her limit and can no longer borrow anything. The longer the better - make up things - most likely she won't remember if she borrowed them or not.

I know how you feel Symphony,
