It's a horrid, nasty illness and it must be hell for you to watch your mother suffering from it. There is a TV ad over here in the UK showing someone suffering from it - all you hear is that ghastly breathing sound and it follows a wire from room to room until the screen finally stops at a woman just sitting in a chair attached to all this machinery, fighting for her every breath. Needless to say, it's an anti-smoking advert. I can't bear to watch it and I turn the volume off. What I should really do, of course, is rip my cigarette packet to shreds. I hope your mother has more good days than bad days, because that's the best anyone can wish for her. It's very sad.
