Stuart is different. After so much subterfuge, he cannot risk to drink late into the nights. His intake is not felt by his adrenal system, attuned to the fear. So many years of sharing your soul for two people! After having nothing left to betray, after having betrayed family, community, country; he now must betray his own enemy, to whom he has so completely committed himself in defection.
