It would probably shoot to the top of the charts.

I think it depends a lot on who is writing them.  Journalists in particular are used to creating 'tantalising' headlines for copy, it's part of the job and obviously aimed at persuading readers to purchase that particular paper.  The same applies to magazine articles, although perhaps not to quite the same degree.  I pay a lot of attention to my titles, I always have, it's something I learnt to do when I first started freelancing and it's stuck with me ever since.  Writers have to sell themselves as much as anyone else and that is all it is, a way of presenting your wares in your shop window to their best advantage.  No one can be blamed for that. At the end of the day, which of these would you rather read:  "Today I went for a walk and saw something unusual" or "WOW!  I saw a UFO today!!!".

I don't think I've ever used click tricks
But then that could also be why I only have 3 bucks in my account. That and I'm not the best writer in the world either. But I haven't really found my niche yet. Maybe a 'Jerry Springer' type blog! Yeah! With in-bred transvestite alien-abducted gay whales who love cross-dressing Elvis impersonaters in trailer parks! Then there would never be any click tricks in the title!

Click Tricks ?
I'm new to this whole arena but I don't think I would use click tricks. I believe in trust and integrity with a lot of honesty mixed in.

Belle,
Yes I agree, even if the click-tricker delivers fine writing with a great message, the feeling of being deceived still leaves a not-so-pleasant taste in my mouth. And, a good writer can do successful marketing without click tricks.

I also hold back from clicking click tricks. it may be because.........
I spent years writing real headlines to go on real stories and so I am averse to marketing.I think it best that one's popularity is based on whole package even if that means losing out on trick click clicks. That to me is more satisfying.

Yes I think that is the correct spelling. I knew it was wrong but I was too lazy to look it up!

Quirky I must admit I've been stung by headlines that don't match the posts and I tend not to revisit....

Hmmmmmmm, I had not thought of deception and trickery in blogging.

Interesting!

(P.S. I think it's 'milquetoast' - am I right?)

I use to hate the trick headlines but is a survival tool here it boils down
to "If you don't want to run with the big dogs, stay on the porch" I try to draw readers in but not by trickery. Good post

I believe in putting out.. I never liked being a tease, even when I was a virgin. I let the guys know right off the bat that they weren't getting any of that, no way, no how. Off subject. Heheh sorry, but I hold to being upfront about everything I can safely be up front about. My spouse would rather I kept my mouth shut about a few things, but he's a hermit! Great post sis.

perhaps "judicious clicking?"

Some bloggers I read without even glancing twice at the headline because
they deliver consistently.  I don't like clicking on enticing headlines and the goods not being delivered, but what do you do other than just avoid that blogger entirely?

be wary of hobby horses, I've heard they can buck like mad and leave nasty hoofprints on your ass!

"Judge Klara" has a nice ring to it.
Well, not really but that is kinda funny. The "fake goodbyes" are the worst of the lot, and I'm doubly ashamed to admit that was my one transgression into trick-click land...

MY HEADLINES SUCK QUIRKY
wait, there's a comma up there...okay made my point, i think... just read a fine post by horus in which he said someone hated the Beatles but this was deception -- the someone in question objected to Horus's um personal distribution of their music in a way that may not be within copyright laws... i was neverthless fascinated by the piece and may get on my hobby horse and rant more vociferously on the subject... so in this case i think the latter but if i did not like the post i might think it ws dastardly deception.. that seems to me most important --- what readers think!tg

Now, wait a minute Quirk! I'm the "judge" on here.
I've been called that in my comments section for calling a "spade a spade". Great post, girlfriend, and so true. I do the same. There are some that honestly don't get my clicks because they are always "leaving" or "naked" when they never are either! LOL

I stopped
reading after "neener neener" due to laughing so hard. Promise I'll pick up where I left off once I can see through my tears of wacky laughter.
