neamer it's hades
the grave, in which the rich man was when he looked up
the fire of his torment? - mental -- understanding that he was still separated from the ultimate Spiritual Realm, where Lazarus (Eliezar) rested "in the bosom of Abraham".
This is a parable, anyway, so we are looking at metaphor. A theologian once said that this is a metaphor for the Jews (rich man) and gentiles (Lazarus, or Eliezar, a servant of Abraham) where the Jews would be left out of the embrace of Abraham and gentiles would be included.
torment would be great mental anguish at realizing this.

Hell Fire thoughts

Different scriptures come to my mind when I think of hell fire.

31"He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.' " (Luke 16:31)

This story of Lazarus and the Rich Man tells us that even if someone from the dead came back to tel us of the hell Fires, we would not listen to them. This was proven by the Risen Christ.

12Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. (1Cor. 13:12)

And

Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day–and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing (2 Timothy 4:8)

I am of the opinion that fear has never been a very good motivator for man, as witnessed by Adam and Eve, both whom chose to disobey God. Now however, fallen man is ina position to glimpse at the riches in store for him and the opportunity of redemption in Christ Jesus and is delighted in working out his salvation in the "fear and trembling" ( Phil. 2:12) which comes from knowing what has been lost and what is to be gained ... The Love, glory, boundless Joy and Entenal Peace of our Lord.
