SYMPH - If your friend is not a professional editor, it is possible
that she might welcome your request to have the book back to have it edited. There is the possibility that she got in over her head and wishes she hadn't offered to do it. I would tell her that you have decision to make and that you need the whole thing back to evaluate where you stand.

Not stupid SYM...
just trusting that people are as thoughtful as yourself. I've made that mistake a time or two myself. I think most people have, at least once. Asking for your work back doesn't have to mean or imply that you believe she's doing something underhanded, it just means that you aren't in need of her services...
Whether she's being on the up and up or not isn't even the real issue, it's whether or not she's handling this edit job timely enough for your needs. Approach it like that with her, in a friendly way, and you'll be fine. If this hurts your friendship, I'd have to wonder if she was much of a friend to begin with?!?
It's always a good idea to be aware of the potential that someone can screw you over, but you don't necessarily have to make it known that you're aware. At least, not at this point. Good luck!!

I would personally ask for it back immediately.
She should at least have provided some edited chapters for your approval by now (and it is your work so this would be expected, at least by me, if it were mine), and I wouldn't personally wait around hoping for the best. I'm just a "suspicious Aloysius" I guess, but this quality has saved my hide in the past. If she didn't provide it after I'd asked for it, I'd see a lawyer.

Symphony, it's always great to believe in the good of people
but just to be safe, send the original version to the copyright office. Her in the U.S. we can pick up forms from the public library--- I'm sure the same applies or something similar in England. Anyway, the library would know. Also, you could do what is called a "poor man's copyright". Send it to your self via public mail and then do not open it. Leave it sealed.

Symphony, if this editing goes on much longer, be honest with her and tell her "you said you would edit it, and i respected that but respect MY work and leave it for me, not to merge things so its our book" good luck!

Symphony,
I wouldn't worry too much about it. Editing can take a long time, even for a professional editor whose job is to get through your one manuscript. I'm sure your friend has other things, which is why it's better to hire someone if you want to get it done quicker. I would ask to see it, just so you can see where she is and get some peace of mind.
I don't think she'll steal it, but if you have another copy of the book go ahead and mail it to yourself, and leave it unopened so you can demonstrate if you need to that you have an earlier copy if she sends it in to get published and says it's hers. I'm not too clear on the legal options but I think this would work, and if not it can't hurt!

Hi Symphony
Here's what I know about waiting and writing...it's to be expected. When you actually get to the point of sending off a manuscript it's not unusual to wait months even over a year for a reply.
Now for right now, a writing class (I've taken many) is a great way to improve your own editing so you don't need to rely on friends. And writing groups can help provide the editing eye of the many people in the group. They're worth it and out there.
When writing's in the blood, nothing can stand in your way.

Its easier to detect online stuff plagiarism than a book's plagiarism. She could have copied the files/material. Sorry I don't know how to deal with this. Maybe lodge a report with details, date you gave it to her, your original version of the book. any other verbal agreement etc. Like a civil case police report. Keep it safely in case you may need to use this as evidence one day. Maybe others will have other ideas on this matter.

yes I must and I should stand firm on this......................so what should I do?.....................lol
seriously.........
should I tell her not to worry about doing it now?
but then will I have to worry about her keeping it for herself or writing a very simular by changing my words, and passing it off as her own?
I am not entirly sure if she would do any of that , because I am too trusting and I am not a very good judge of charactor and I have not even known her long and she is into writing
oh gosh I am a fool.............writing this comment to you has opened my eyes on how even more stupid I am ........argh
its too late.............right?

I don't know the character of that friend so I can't comment much. An editor is just that; not a co-writer. She didn't ask your permission to be a co-writer, you didn't volunteer to share the writing of the book - there's no "we". The new symphony is going to stand firm on this!

Symp--editing can take a long time. But, you should set a deadline with
your friend. Tell her you want to publish in say, eight weeks. She has had five weeks and you expect her to return the work in three weeks, finished or not. This is an estimated and you can do what you want, but set some definite times. love f.
