Symph, holy crap, are you telling MY life story???? o. my. god.
It's the curse of being a kind, generous person, and on top of it you are gorgeous.
I never know how to handle those needy neighbors either. do you tell them to flake off, ignore them, get pissed, say no? I always beat myself up for weeks after doing any one of them. *sigh.*

GOD, I can't STAND situations like this!!
Ya try to be nice, but after a while, ya just have to be firm, not necessarily rude, but JUST SAY NO! "Say NO to Annoying People." That's your new slogan. What do you think? I think you can do it.
If not, think of someone you know that you believe could and would do it, mentally prepare yourself, and in your mind, pretend you are them speaking to the annoyer. You don't have to have acting lessons under your belt. Just the temporary mind-set will do. Try it. It works!

*Sigh* yes, giving souls such as yourself are often ill treated
in this manner, even or perhaps especially by those closest. Saying "No" firmly and meaning it was the hardest thing I've ever needed to learn. But once you conquer it, the self respect earned and boost to your confidence is priceless! Hang in there, you can do it.

When she says she doesn't have any of that stuff for you, tell her to give your fiver back and stop bugging you. Why should you provide for her when she can't give you the things you want. And if she does have all that stuff? Well, make good friends with her, cause she's a freak and knows how to party!

I've offered several reasons why in the past! but let's put that idiocy aside. One of the things that happens to one who is abused is that their sense of limits and boundaries is affected detrimentally. They can't figure out where to set limits and when. So you have the nice person who is helpful to everyone -- too helpful -- or the very detached person who won't let anyone near her/him. The same person could be both at different times of course. I've seen it.
One thing, though -- better she smoke those cigarettes than YOU! tg

Sym, I'm just like you; I try to be nice and giving to people, and sometimes they take advantage of it. When I think about telling them off, I start to feel guilty. I've recently been getting better at ignoring the guilty feeling because I realized I'm not being an asshole, but they are, and I'm sick of people taking advantage of me.
It's tough, but you have to do what's best for YOU, not anyone else (except your kids of course).
