Money

And then what, Mihail? What happens to the ten billion? Does it go into Mugabe's pockets? Or some other tyrant? Does all the rich, creamy western money only serve to fatten the bank accounts of assorted thugs and kleptocrats? Look at where the problems are. Look at who is really poor. Most of them live in tyrannies that would make your hair stand on end. They are also places the western world has channeled tens of billions of dollars of cash, in-kind aid, technology, and education, all to no avail, because the tyrants know full well that 1., A modern, educated populace wouldn't tolerate them for an instant, and 2., They'd rather steal the money then use it to alleviate the suffering of their own people.

What causes the out-of-control HIV epidemic, complete with female infant rape, in South Africa? Lack of money? Or Mbeki's stubborn, and stupid, insistence that HIV has nothing to do with AIDS, that it's all a "special African problem?" Hell, the Pharmas even offered to give him drugs (after being pressured, admittedly) but he's not interested. How many will die because of that? And how is that problem "only money?"

That guy who says it's not rocket science, it's only money, is a fool. And anybody who possesses such a simplistic view of the problems of PovertyWorld probably shouldn't be trusted on anything. Finally, if you really want to make sure that people with money become permanent enemies of even the notion of charity, just try to "force" them to shovel money where you think it should go - against their will.

Thank goodness I'm a libertarian. I've done many things, but at least I've never proposed enforcing charity at the point of a gun.
