Two answers

Payments are aggregated from all readers at the end of each payment cycle so this is usually not an issue. So 0.17% of one writer payment may be added to 2.3% from another and so on. Also, readers' subscription plans vary quite a lot. Some may be paying $5.95 a month but others may be on a discounted six-month or annual subscription which means less per month.

The answer to your earnings question is similar to our answer a few weeks back to your question about rankings going up but earnings not following. Rankings and earnings do not necessarily have a correlation since earnings depend on whether most or all of your readers are reading only you or many other bloggers.

So while your ranking may go down because the number of unique readers is decreasing -- your earnings may stay steady or even increase if some or most of your remaining readers are mainly reading you. When they are mostly reading you, a significant percentage of their writer payments are going to you while maybe the readers who're no longer reading you were only browsing and read one page of yours, for instance.

Hope that helps!
