Television networks are scared of original programming nowadays. If the treatment they read isn't something that's worked before, 9 times out of 10 it gets scrapped. Every now and then you'll get an original show slipping through, but then you have to worry about the ratings. Even if the show has a loyal fanbase, if the demographic they are targeting isn't totally into the show it gets scrapped.
The problem is that there are too many stupid people in the world who are content to be spoon-fed drivel. These are the people that laugh at fart jokes and don't get the intelligent ones. These are the people that would rather watch something they are comfortable with (a formulaic sitcom) rather than try something new. These are the people that Hollywood is pandering to.
That's pretty much why I stopped watching TV.

Monk is still good. Most of the sitcoms are rehashes of I Love Lucy and The Honeymooner episodes. All the Law & Order episodes look alike anymore. No wonder reality shows are so popular.
