all prophecy is is history written after the fact and made to seem like it was written before.

the book of Revelation is different.  It was written to obscure a meaning -- it's all about the Roman Empire of the day, but it's couched in metaphor to protect it and its writer.  else the romans would not have taken kindly to an accurate description.

prophecies come and go -- and wither with the wind and are past -- sorry P. and Cantey and several others, but -- it's been done before -- it hasn't come true yet.  when it does we'll sit up and take notice.

I have no doubt that someone would have created their own prophecies in that case. Humans seem to have a need to believe they have a clue as to what is going to happen in the future. Most people are very, very scared of the unknown and so create things like Armageddon or the basic ideas of an afterlife in order to try and make it less unknown. And most of the time it is 100% self fulfilling. Either that or the prophecies are stretched in order to make them fit into whatever it is people wish to make them fit into.

Lest we forget...

W himself declared, aloud, a Holy War on Iraq not long after 9/11.  I guess what's good for the goose is good for the gander in politics and war.  Doomsdayers have a funny way of making darned sure the prophecies come true.

Here's a thought:  What if the Book of Revalations, Nostradamus, et al had never existed?  What "prophecy" would society then feel the need to fulfill?

Nice reading you,

kooka_lives --- it's funny how those suggesting that a holy war is somehow
a good thing are not of fighting age. Every last one of them out of the age group of men that would be called up for service. I guess it's easier to send someone else to die for your beliefs. As far as the end of the world goes that is old news. Throughout history wackos have been suggesting that the end is near. If you can imagine the number 666 plays a big part in this. Back in 666 AD a good portion of the earth's populace felt the world was ending. The real comical part was in 1666 when a western European rain relentlessly poured down on the countryside for 3 straight months. This had people building arks with nary a decent stick of lumber to be had anywhere. I've always wondered how the simple and convoluted mind could make a connection between their God being all forgiving while at the same time wanting to destroy everything. And as if this is not nonsensical enough send armies off to kill people for what they believe in. Yeah that makes perfect sense ....if you are sniffing glue.
