Faith ...
Sometimes just having faith in *yourself* and the strength you've already shown can help you with a struggle, especially one that is self-inflicted. If you don't see any progress (or things seem to be getting worse) find something in your life that is getting better and count that as progress. For instance, better awareness of what you're feeling, getting more in touch with yourself (circumstances forced it, or you chose to), etc can all be articles of faith.

if things don't get better...

It's a REALLY good question and one I've asked and continue asking.  I'm a little fried because it's friday, so I'm afraid I won't be very articulate.

But in a nutshell, if things DON'T get better, then it could become a question of survival, or of choice:  If you continue to remain as optimistic or at least determined as possible, you will survive.  If you are consumed by bitterness, indifference or defeat, you may not...or life might get even worse.

Sometimes (I know I havea  lot of gall to say this but just to play along with the argument) what happens in life is less significant in its effect on us, than our reaction to it, or interpretation of it.  I sometimes think it's attitude that defines life, rather than events.

But of course, some people really do suffer what seems to be an unfair number of negative events.  Still, some of those same people are the very ones who survive best, who are the strongest proponents of positive attitude.  *shrug*
