Just like drugs pushers.
Is it not amazing at how many similarities you can find between the two.

Jonestown should get honourable mention here
and it seems all cults have one thing in common. An enigmatic leader with charm, wit and an uncanny ability to persuade. When one considers what they are selling, in tickets to heaven. Is it any wonder the weak minded, lost and lonely are easily drawn in?

Life ain't a nice thing.
It hits you like a locomotive at the speed of light.
We grow up with the beast -- kids acting like beasts -- tearing and ripping at those who aren't the ":fittest' and you've got to be among the fittest in order to "survive".
I've mentioned this in my God as the Universe as an Organism.
we are chock full of just about every insecurity in the book, and then some.
People's comments and actions add to our insecurities.
then there those who hold out the promise of escape from these things. A new car, new clothes, makeup, beauty add-ons, pump up those muscles -- pop that pill -- $billions are made from these -- and these are the legal means of escape -- oh yes, alcohol.
then we go into the not so legal -- mj, coke, crack, heroin, LSD, peyote, meth, and so on.
people frantically seeking that which offsets those insecurities.
then there's
JESUS IS THE ANSWER
of course the other religions have their equivalent.
this gets a lot of people who are at the bottom of their lives -- and it helps -- and if it helps -- as Yeshua said, (paraphrased) "Whatever is not harmful to me, is helpful." If it helps, then it is good.
but religion is just like all this other stuff -- someone out there wants to "sell" it.
either for money, or power.
And it's the glibbest (just like politics) that get the followers -- and there are those who see that they have a power to bring in people -- people who are lost, who are empty, who have nothing within themselves -- not even themselves.
and the religion in this case keeps those people lost in order that the leader(s) might have power over them, receive their money, compensate for their own insecurities.
people look for something outside themselves for their salvation. This is what I call the Christ Syndrome. as long as this is promoted, there will always be cults -- something different, something that holds out an answer because maintstream religion has bogged down in mythical images.
Paul said in Colossians, "Christ in you, the hope of glory." Yeshua said, "The Kingdom of Heaven is within you." The power of the individual. Too much, religion doesn't want that. They want power OVER the individual.
