My son is in Afghanistan, too
and as far as I know, no one told him he couldn't take a Bible.... as a matter of fact he has the Bible his grandmother gave him.
So, what does he say it is like there? Well, the landmines have to be "respected" of course... he does think the weather there is great and prefers Afghanistan over Louisiana where they spent time in the summer training (100 degrees; 100% humidity) Afghanistan has very low humidity and a breeze. He says the mountains are amazing. Loves the scenery. There are some Russian women who give massages.... and there's a Burger King (no kidding)... The food is excellent, and there is such a diversity of troops from all over the world that it is an intriguing experience. Shopping is good what with the Afghan traveling bazaars and the Armed Forces Exchange PX. They do sleep in a tent. (Not a big deal for an outdoor guy who likes a rugged life.) Bootleg DVDs are available there before they come out at Blockbuster here. There is a "cyber tent" with the Internet available.
Don't get too sappy over these guys. They are tough, and they are doing a good job of keeping us safe. Let's save our tears for the ones who actually step on those landmines.
