Responding to comments on your blog
You've gotten up to speed fast! 
Seems like you've identified the couple of ways you can respond to comments on your blog. You should do what feels natural.
I think responding to comments on your blog itself shows that you're interacting with your readers. And interested in hearing what they have to say in respond to your writing. It may also inspire other readers to join in the conversation.
Reading and commenting on your commentators blogs shows that you are interested in checking their work out. And the bonus is you might find some great writing that you'll enjoy reading.
