of course
there had to be story to validate the commandments -- god gave them to moses -- that did it.
my take is that much myth has truthful roots.
I think there really might have been a Moses -- singular or conceptual -- representing release form Egyptian control. There is a mountain in Saudi Arabia (not the Sinai Desert) that had been a sacred place and a place where "supernatural" events occured (maybe earth-shaking as in earthquakes) and this is more likely because it had been associated with god or gods for tens of millenia.
put them together and what have you got?
