The Apocryphon of John

Westwend -

I first came across the reference in Elaine Pagels' wonderful book, Beyond Belief - The Secret Gospel of Thomas. The Aprocryphon of John is one of the texts found at Nag Hammadi. She did a wonderful job of explaining the "luminous epinoia" and its meaning. I then went to one of my favorite sites - earlychristianwritings.com and read the entire text. It was a fascinating read, but a bit above me. I am glad Ms. Pagels understood it and could explain it.

Agreed
To call oneself and Christian and then to not love is definitely taking the Lord's name in vain. And we do have all we need to know inside of us. God/Jesus' word is in us when we are born. In the Apocraphon of John it's called "Luminous Epinoia". The knowledge of the universe, knowing right from wrong, and our spirituality is all available to us, if we will just listen to our true selves - if we will "awake" from the fog.

too many christians use god's name in vain

"call me 'lord, lord' but do not the things that I say . . . "

I find that many Christians talk about how great it is to "know the Lord" and are so proud that they are "Christians" and such -- and Jesus loves you and we need to love Jesus.

What did Jesus say?

inasmuch as you did it to the least of these, you did it to me.

Love thy neighbor as thyself.

Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

Love one another as I have loved you

Paul said

Love is patient, love is kind, love seeks not its own, etc. (I cor 13)

John said, If you cannot love your brother, whom you do see, how can you love God, whom you don't see.

to say you are Christian and not follow these sayings is taking the lord's name in vain.

Those are written words

It's nice to read those words from the bible, but I honestly feel God's word is inside of us.  The bible also says "I am crucified with Christ.  Nevertheless, I live.  Yet not I, but Christ liveth in me, and the life which I now live in flesh.  I live by the faith of the son of God who loved me and gave himself for me"

I think the ten commandments are interesting to read, but truly, within everyone, whether they admit or not, it is inanely known what is right and what is wrong.  I've wondered, and even WRITTEN about the beginnings of the words, or feelings of right and wrong, but I still have to be truthful and say that the ten commandements are sort of "inside" me, and that is the only reason why humanity survives......knowing right from wrong.  Therefore, it MUST be inside all of us because we continue to be.  Unfortunately many people choose to do wrong for reasons known only to them, the thing is, they KNOW.  We all know.
