Never write in public
what you don't want the ENTIRE world to read or know about. Just as soon as you think you're anonymous, you'll be "outed."

freedom of speech
Your freedom of speech ends at the next person's skin. You have a choice about what you say but you also have to deal with the consequences. If your words hurt another person you should not be surprised or offended if they comment negatively in return. A blog is not a personal diary because it is published in public where others can read it. Therefore you should not write in a blog what you would not say to the people you are writing about.

it's always best to go ahead and change the name to something ficticious

Careful...

Look up slander and related terms. You'll find that, although you can say/write anything you want, anything that can be proved to distinguish an individual may allow that individual (or family in your case) to sue and claim damages.

And, it does NOT matter that you are telling the truth - sometimes that can be even more reason for taking someone to court.

Where
it isn't illegal to my knowledge to have an on-line journal.  There may be legal repercusions if you use someones' real name or cause slanderish remarks.  It would be interesting to know.  I don't think that precedence has been established on this issue yet.
