Symphony - it really annoys me when my boys swear like they do sometimes. On the other hand, there is not much I can do about it except to correct them each time they let fly. Eventually, it all loses its impact. Any hints?

I think i spoke my piece on this to Fay Guy post

it's about what you mean in using it -- the words have more power because they are taboo.  But if all you do is talk like you're a reject from a David Mamet play, it also says something about your character.  I have a very filthy mouth and am a passionate defender of the First Amendment, but there's more to life than saying the word "fucking" as an adjective to every fucking word you say.  For example, there is "fucking," the act thereof. Uusally more fun than the the word itself (as I recall).  One exception that proves the rule: at about two and a half, wife was on the phone, sofia says, "mommy get off the fucking phone!"  We convulse in hysterics at the sight of this little angel speaking like...well, Wonky, I suppose!

Symphony, I miss you, but my blog time will be limited again for a while.  The JD is on ice, I swear! tg

ha ha ha...
how we choose to express ourselves is indicative of who we are. swearing (and slang) has always been a vehicle of almost rebellious communication for younger generations. for generation x (mine) swearing is largely not perceived as vulgar or crass; it's simply how we speak to one another. maybe it's a generational thing - we do swear a lot more than more generations, it seems. i don't think it's a sign that our culture is becoming more desensitised to crudeness; just that we choose to be offended by things (like racism, sexism, idiotism) other than words. :)

Swear words lose their effect when they're not used in private, so that's where they should be: private.  Otherwise, they become common words and we have to come up with new words to shock each other in private, and our culture becomes a little more vulgar.

Cussing--the unsung poetry of a fucked-up generation.

I agree with you Symphony and swearing to excess is vulgar and crude.
I admit to overuse in my writing, but do not use it to excess in my life.  love you, s
