A lot of people jump in a private jet and go to Paris for dinner, so 3 hours is nothing. I'd do it on a Friday night, and get a room at a local Inn. I always jump at the chance to travel, no matter how close or far away from home it may be.

Maybe meet halfway?
If you go out of your way to meet with a guy you just come off as desparate. Plus, once you go out of your way to see him he'll expect it again.
