A different approach..

One of the things I think about when naming characters is how real-life people are named in our culture.  No one knows what your personality will be when you are born, making it impossible to be named after some or another characteristic.  Sometimes, thinking this way can actually add depth to a character.  As an example, take a name like Anna Maria.  I would consider it a traditional and fairly soft name.  If attributed to a character that is rough or adventurous, the character could gain some additional depth.  Also, it allows you to develop the character over the course of your novel in much the same way that people develop - independent of their name.

Just some thoughts.  Let me know what you think, and good luck with your writing!
