My department is so small that there is a chief, two sergeants and some patrol officers. I'm second in command here. I think I should know who I am working for.

My experience would suggest that many cops think...
that they're too tough to need any help in the defensive or agressive parts of their jobs...it's too bad really, hubris is not a good replacement for training...I know the bad guys, the ones who aren't just druggies anyhow, work out and practice the martial arts...
