proper punishment
I"m going to play devil's advocate and say that the father, who was clearly unable to care for his child and possibly had a criminal record (probably that's why he didn't take her to the police or other authorities), did a good thing for Courtney by leaving her in the care of a sympathetic female (women are almost never pedophiles, so that was a small risk).  Now at least Courtney will get the care and attention she needs.  As for the father, he should be prosecuted for what he did, of course, and I'm sure he will be.  In any case, when he's caught and brought to trial, a jury will, and should, decide on proper punishment.

Poor Courtney.
Some people are grossly unprepared for life.  There is no other explanation, no solution.  Some are shorted by God, or genetics, some by, yes I know, bad parenting, or haunting abandonments of their own.  Either way you slice it, we live in a society, ot a hut in the jungle.  We are here for each other, like it or lump it.  And I ain't sayin' we're here for him, the loser, to take up his slack....we're here for her...to raise up her existence beyond bleakness, to love.
