someone has told me God speaks to them.
I don't want to disparage anyone's experience
and I won't
people's personal experiences are powerful
they are real.

Like the nature religions -- anything you met could house a "god" -- trees, bushes (even burning bushes) ponds. They all are alive.
These religions held the natural environment in much higher esteem than the "superior" Christian religion does.
Like indigenous Americans would apologize toe the animals they killed -- saying "I need food." or "I need your skin for clothing." , etc.
Holding as sacred everything you encounter really is the epitome of religious expression.
The Christian religion separates God from Nature, and Man from Nature and God from Man.
We are One and we have to recognize that.

animals excluded
With the exception of St. Francis, nonhuman animals are not high on the totem pole in most religions, which is, for me, a real sin. They have a kind of purity that humans lack. I like what James Thurber said: If I have any beliefs about immortality, it is that certain dogs I have known will go to heaven, and very few persons. (I would change "dogs" to "animals", but you get the idea).

is he is ir is he isn't
some people think it matters.
God tells us what matters is what we do here and now.
even if God weren't there to tell us -- and who has spoken to God lately? Who has had God speak to them?
Jim Bakker said God spoke to him -- and then you know what he did.
It doesn't matter.
If God is not, then we should make this life the best we can.
If God is, then we should make this life the best we can.
There is no difference whether God is or God isn't.

that's the greatest call of a Christian;
to believe in Christ even when we feel no need to. When all things are good, not just during the bad times. That is the summation of faith.
At least you are honest and open. God is there in the good times too, not just when the stuff hit's the fan. As James says; are you cheerful, then praise Him..and he goes on to talk about when we are sick, suffering etc. then we praise Him and pray.
Your continued friend; Pastor Brenda

Wanted to drop this comment . . .
to let you know you're not alone. Judging from the GREAT comments you already have I'll have to ammend that to "WE are not alone."

It was a great comfort to me
when I first realized that religion doesn't own the god idea, and religious people do not own God. The Bible has nothing to do with God, in my opinion...at least no more so than many other interesting works of literature, and sometimes a license plate, bumper sticker or offhand remark. The dichotomy of God is that the moment we seek to define who/what God is...that is the precise moment that we begin to not truly know. "He who knows does not know, and he who does not know, knows." (Now who was it that said that? Whoever it was, I totally agree.)
