how about relying on prayer for discernment? Choices aren't always clear and prayer (talking with God) helps. Not something that's easy to explain to a non-believer. Clearly, the guy in the example you cited has problems making sensible choices and his reliance on prayer( or his claim to it) suggests the problem isn't prayer. He doesn't want to face an unpleasant truth and seems to want to excuse himself from painful choices. I don't think that problem is confined to people who pray.

You point to problems that you find with Christians that are true of people as a whole and you think it points out the hypocrisy of Christians and the bogusness of organized religion. Because people aren't perfect you want use things they do wrong to discredit their creed.

I'm gonna say it and I hope you don't take offense. You are an intelligent writer and you raise interesting questions. But you get illogical when it comes to what I mentioned above. You have an aversion to Christianity that isn't based on reason. I think that's because understanding it requires a harmony between Faith and Reason and you have already decided not to believe.

The other ways I am thinking of are hard work, learning and figuring out your goals and how to achieve them. Everyone is able to do these things on their own. It they need to pray it should not replace these things, but help them to focus on their goals.

How so?
This is what I have seen in the world.
There are no leaps in logic here.

You really take some leaps with logic.
