Regarding Russia:
Two things:
1. Do you think that a lack of religion in Russia might be due to the decades of religious persecution? Stalin murdered thousands upon thousands solely on the basis of their religion (Jews, Catholics, Russian Orthodox all were targeted because they opposed the totalitarian Communist party imposing their athiest views upon them). If this is the case, then your example might not be as effective as you were hoping.
2. Many Russians, I'm sure, were angered by the Communist regime, but I have no proof, nor do you. Any discourse of this nature was outlawed, according to the accounts of numerous defectors. Many things that went on inside the Soviet borders continue to be a mystery, simply because the Soviet leadership was dictatorial.
