Yes...
but there seems to be an older strain that goes back to ancient Greece:  it is about the tradition revolving around the Minotaur.  There was a feature in National Geographic, I think (or was it Discovery?) about practices surrounding bulls...  I am not sure now.

They are from the old 'auto da fe' tradition in Brasil and my favorite was
Bumba Meu Boi ( Bumba My Bull), in the traditions that I know of.  I think that they started in Spain and Portugal, no? Travelling religious plays and holiday re-enactments.
