I love the discussion this has provoked
The difficulty with most organised religion is its intolerance of other beliefs whatever they are. I'm still looking for the answers I'll let you know as soon as I figure out the exact wording of the question.

A de Man
I have run across various sites and there are some here who claim atheists to be immoral. I also know of people personally who think we are as well. It is a very common misconception that is out there.

Who said atheists are immoral?
About the Catholic Church... gee, are you still fixated with the myths that Boettner concocted?

I get your point and even agree with it to a certain extent...
as I said, my point is that Atheism does not gaurantee moral behavior...neither does professing to follow any other belief system...people are hypocrites, big suprise...

Okay
I'll agree that there are Atheist who have been immoral. Although I truly doubt any group has been responsible for more deaths than the Catholic church. We are talking about over a thousand years of witch hunts, crusades and inquisitions. What happened in Russia was on such a scale, but it only lasted decades during a time when the technology was there to do death a lot quicker and be able to keep something of a body count. Do you really think we know just how many people were murdered around the world due to the Catholics deciding that those people could either convert or die?
Atheism as a whole does not have a history because we are not organized in any way that can give us a history. Also it would be hard to say it is Atheism that is responsible for these men's acts because you can not go and say a Atheist group told them to do it. An Atheist truly acts of his/her own when it comes to such thing and can never claim to be doing such things in the name of God. So although there are Atheists who have committed great wrongs, it is not the same to say it is part of the history of Atheism. Atheist have not gone and handed down a way of teaching throughout the years. Quite the opposite. All Atheists I know found it all on their own. A lot were raised with strong religious beliefs, but found them flawed and lacking so they figured it out for themselves.
The same can not be said about the Catholic church. The active beliefs are the same that were taught centuries ago when mass murder was the way of Catholic life.

How ya doin?
First, I have no problem with atheists. Atheism is just another belief system, with no more or less evidence to support it than any other. But, atheists are not necessarily better than any other religious either. You said,"unlike Christians, atheists do not have a long history of violence towards others or promoting hatred." and you are correct to the point that there isn't a long history of atheism period. But Lenin was an atheist, so was Stalin, and Chairman Mao; between them these three men are responsible for more senseless killing than the Catholic Church, and that's saying something...
