I never did memorize large parts of Shakespeare's works, just the fun parts.   I memorized lots of the Bible.  I really enjoyed being a part of "Youth For Christ" which was very active in the Kansas City Area for teens.  Lots to do, lots of things teens liked to do.

That was a busy time for you back then. That's a whole lot of Shakespeare on the brain.

The available productions of Shakespeare that showed up on tv here were dismal affairs, though they were considered great at the time. But now we have some fantastic adaptations, particularly those from Kenneth Branaugh that bring it so alive!

Good evening,

I bet that was tough.

We had a semester or two of Shakespeare when I was in my

11th and 12th years, and I also found it to be a challenge. I believe it was because of the antiquated and poetic language, combined with being rooted in a time and place that were totally different from life as I knew it. The reason most of us got through it was because Mrs. Newton - who taught it - was from the UK & had a doctorate from Oxford. She'd married a yank soldier in the last days of WWII and moved to our little backwoods school to be with him. The story goes she was the most qualified and highest paid teacher in the entire school district. At that time there was no college within commuting distance. Those of us who loved reading, writing and history were SO lucky.

Good afternoon

I have to agree with you. At 16, Shakespeare was the furthest thing from my mind. At least you're honest about it. I too had an operation when I was a kid that took place over the Easter holiday in 1973. The results of that surgery have lasted me a lifetime.
