Very well told. The only thing I might vary is "ghosts of scars" and "ghost of a woman" used so closely together. Maybe a synonym for one of the ghost words for variety?
A relative's husband had Dementia as he aged. His estranged daughter came to see him toward his end and he, of course, didn't know who she was. She explained that she was his daughter. He looked at her and said, "You're not my daughter. My daughter is young and beautiful and you are old and ugly."

Mother died from Dementia, Dad had died six Months before. For several years before those events I would say to my Sister, "if Gad dies first I will hate that old woman." Then he did die and I couldn't hate my little lost Mother. Before she got sick, she had been my best friend, my comfort and the person who knew me better than I knew myself...and still loved me even as a rotten teenager.
