I love to walk but I find that I love to swim more. Walking helps mellow or uplift your mood. It gives you time to ponder life and what is happening or to just enjoy the moment.

Good afternoon

I once used to walk five miles without issue. Now I am lucky to walk five blocks. I have no problem donating to the needy. In the world today though it seems that more people than not are needy, so you have to pick and choose. I am tired of the GoFundMe accounts on Facebook since most people should have health, life, and disaster insurance. I do not like being asked for money by charities. I much prefer to give on my own. It's a different world today than the one that I grew up in. My mother-in-law was wiped out a few years ago by a Nigerian man who continued to write her, professing his love and many promises. He set up a fake name and profile that made her believe that he was the real deal. It took us three years to get her to stop giving him money out of her meager monthly widow's pension. The prey is out there, ready and willing to sink their teeth in if we let them.

I don't know it just is difficult. I have made a rule for myself some years ago. That I would choose one local need that I became aware of through the year and give what I could to that person or group. it is amazing how something always hits me during the year.

Re: adnohr

I can imagine.  It's bad enough being a nurse when you can't really do much to help the patient.  I have been with so many dying patients trying to make them comfortable.

Re:

As am I.  Can't help but think how that would work for me in this day and age.

That's a famous part of the Bible. Many are too focused on the worldy and its possessions.

Re: adnohr

My Dad taught us to care and even though some would think us poor, to give to those in need around us.  He never passed a beggar on the street, he always gave them something.  And when he gave to one he would stop and talk to them friend to friend.  I never forget that.

Re: Ciel

I pick and chose and give accordingly, but I always feel bad about the others.

I have that avalanche of begging mail daily, too, and all the little 'gifts'--can't count the number of return-address stickers I have, but could give a weight-count probably in pounds and ounces! I have a few chosen charities I will give to. One or two, monthly.

Humane Society, Covenant House, Habitat For Humanity, International Rescue Committee, and American Indian College Fund. That's my list, pretty much. No longer on-line, though.

It seems they share their mailing lists - those charitable institutions.

Give to the one and get gimme-gimme letters from the many. I pitch 99% of em into the trash can these days. Any donations I make are to the local food bank, the senior center and other fund drives - local only and cash only. Even donations to the Red Cross go to high CEO salaries and "administrative" costs.

It is heartbreaking, TAPS. When I worked in the streets, the organization was very careful to teach all of us, especially those with hands-on, not to succumb to the despair surrounding us. It wasn't easy, and more than one of us lost plenty nights of sleep over the misfortune of others. For each one helped, there seemed to be dozens of others that we just couldn't get to. We learn to trust that we are sent to the ones who need us most.

It is rather frustrating when one receives useless gifts a kind of plea to send more .

One wonders how much is being spent on adverts etc.. I think the majority of givers

do so at Christmas. Of course occasionally there is a heartbreak situation.

I think we should give to the needy but we must remember not to be targets for bad actirs. Remember that your family has financial needs as well.
