Good one!
I should have put this in a bit more context. I was fourth in a class of 188. The people in the top three above me got absolutely NO scholarships from organizations that were in the business of handing out scholarships. Not one of them got a scholarship. I got thirteen of the sixteen different scholarships that were given out on graduation day.
When I talked to my high school counselor about this fact, I was told that the organizations actually looked at what the various student had actually done in school, not just GPA. Most of the people in the top twenty had taken easy courses like "Making Your Bed 101" or "Water Painting While Blindfolded" type classes. I took chemistry, physics, psychology, algebra, and geometry. PLUS, I had taken a test course in 'Creative Writing" that lead to that course being opened up to all schools in Michigan.
I was driven to do well for personal reasons I have best explained in my short story, "My Long Road Back."
I sometimes wish things had been better, but because of it, I was able to meet and fall in love with two very wonderful ladies.

If I'm still around when you come to your 70th reunion, it will be
interesting to hear if those who were morons then still meet the criteria. My 70th reunion would be next year if anyone was still around with the capability to organize and plan the event - most likely at a nearby senior facility...
