I have found that a barely noticeable shot of sweetness makes magic on the palate with soups and stews. A dash of acidity, too, like lemon with chicken or balsamic vinegar with beef.

Years ago I used to make a beef casserole with  a can of Coca Cola and a tin of chicken noodle soup, plus some greens. No it wasn't good for the family but the"picky eater" loved it and would polish off his portion and even ask for more!!
