Hmm - I live with the differences between the Japanese and Canadian cultures, and the way words can hurt without meaning to do so. It ain't easy sometimes. I like the quote. Great post!!

Thanks! Yes, it's interesting to read a well-translated book of another culture. I am thinking of TAIKO which was written by a Japanese historian/novelist, and the attitudes and world-view of the Japanese are very evident in the translation.

You have a depth of insight which is enviable. Words- or lack thereof - mean many things to many people. It's easy to hurt but easier to be nice. As a person who was born into a first-generation immigrant family, words and phrasing were not always used in The King's English and my clipped, shortness was usually overcome through reading and education. Still, different authors willl always appeal to differently wired folks. Good post.
