The Fashionable Society was & is a uniquely different part of a society.... living in their own world, their own way...it's superficial for the rest but that's the only way they know life so it's very real for them.

Interesting post.

There is a lot of symbolism behind the brewing of the coffee.

Re: Aba Brother - Thank you so much.

Oh sis, I can feel that romantic streak in you when you say, I would've run away into the country, or certainly would have considered doing so. That's 😊 Lol. And yes, to a ton. You inspire me with your fine comments, or, rather egg me on.

Dear Kabu ma’am

Historical accounts give us a picture of the past, a glimpse into their day-to-day lifestyles. Their occupations, their culture and nuances of cultural one-up-manship. But its these great works of the writers of that time that give us such enjoyment.

Re: C C T

Fashionable goes with superficial.  But for it to last long is not natural, as you say. Indeed so. Actually, teaching being my profession, I do have to spend hours researching, but I enjoy doing so. Thank you so much C C T, and its been some time.

Aba Brother - Thank you so much.

The place names are all very interesting. The various items you mention in Pope's poem held such a monumentous appeal to the people for whom he wrote, I would think. By writing as he did, Pope has left us with a glimpse into the life and times of a bygone time. I do think I would have run away into the country had I lived as they did! Or else, I certainly would have considered doing so.

As alway, your post is most welcome and very informative.

It is always interesting to me to read anything historical...as I grow older though I leave behind the fantasy of living in the fashionable World and try to learn more of the lower middle classes and the poor folks ...those people either struggling to gain a foothold into an easier life or left is hopeless squaller.

It was all so superficial. Obviously, it could not last the power gradually dissolved.

Goodness, you must spend hours researching.  Quite intriguing.

Re: Corbin

T.S. Eliot is the American whom I hold in great regards. He beat all the British poets of the early 20th century and reigned throughout as the best americam poet of the period. He made the British look like toddlers during the log-rolling thirties and the drum-rolling forties. And their new god after W H Auden was Dylan Thomas.

Our drink became coffee after the revolution breaking away from England.  No true American would drink tea any more!
