Re: sassyass,

Yes, I have some of those boxes and bags that will go to the thrift store. I am an out-of-sight, out-of-mind person, so once it's gone, it's well and truly gone!

Re: Pat,

I wonder if it's the peculiar nature of the week between Christmas and New Year's that isn't just about making ready to turn the page, but keeping in that odd pocket of time.

Re: Goldiec,

I have always had such a hard time throwing away things that might be actually useful in some imagined universe. It was a wonderful realization that one can donate such stuff and not only have more room, but turn over the responsibility for actually making use of such stuff to some other sucker  creative person.

Re: Sea Gypsy,

Guests or not, doesn't it feel satisfying to be ready for them? My guest bed is, when it comes down to it, just another flat surface, and never goes for long unadorned by this-and-that and stuff and things...!

We get rid of the old to make room for the new.

I usually fill a box that is intended for the thrift store. I also like to clean my spice cupboard and organize the spices and herbs according to usage. Deep cleaning my kitchen is something that I do monthly due to my having OCD.

Mom always did the laundry on New Year's day - to start the year clean.

Old wringer washer, rinse tubs to set up on a bench, haul water in a bucket from the kitchen sink, empty it the same way. Hang it all on the clothesline strung between the garage and a tree if it was sunny, on the porch clotheslines if not.  Lots of work then.

We do try to discard what we don't need. There are items we donate and some that we toss.

Actually, I do try to clear out things and try, operative word being TRY, to get a handle on cleaning. I am usually not 100% successful but the effort is gratifying. My goal this year, in addition to cleaning, is to get the guest room changed around. Ho ho ho. No guests, so that is ludicrous.
