Go to Life in the fast lane--where's the on ramp?Add a commentGo to RECAP: 1953

This is such an interesting part of your past.

That would have been the ideal setup in many ways. It was like a living history lesson, future mom training, and the added benefit of the warmth from a loving home. It has been years since I have heard the telephone company referred to as, Ma Bell. The tattoos on their wrists are really quite a sad realization.

Re: Annicita

They talked about it. Everyone did in those days because we were still, in the early 1950s, in recovery from it. The USA and other countries were hunting down escaped Nazi's, war stories were part of daily life.

Did they tell you much about WWII or did they prefer to keep it in the past and not relive it?

You have had many experiences Pat. I guess one cannot win them all. You really made it out of zero at times. A bit different to those who have it handed to them.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Goldiec about the numbers

I can't even imagine the horrors this family witnessed in their life.  I'm so glad they were kind to you. I was thinking those numbers were like the mark of the beast that I've read about.  I know they are different but it's all so evil.

Re: Re: Re: Goldiec about the numbers

They were given sequential numbers.  In 1953 when I met this family, they had only been liberated for 8 years. The war ended in 1945, when I was in 5th grade.

Re: Re: Goldiec

Pat, I wonder if the Jewish people all got the same number or different numbers.  This was just evil.  I never watch any of the documentaries because I can't handle what the people went through during the war.

Re: Goldiec

Jews were rounded up by the Nazis and sent to concentration camps, loaded in railroad cars like cattle and guarded by armed soldiers. At the camps they were tattooed with numbers to identify them as Jews. Families were broken up, those not physically able to work were marched into the gas chambers and executed, buried in mass graves. The prisoners endured torture, beatings, rape, forced labor. Six million were killed but many were liberated when American troops and allies freed them.

Highlights from the past

Pat, thanks for sharing a little piece of your history.  I really enjoy looking back in time with you.  The highlight throughout this post was the fact that you always tried to make the most of life.  It truly is a gift.  After graduation, you found a job and a place to live, and that was truly an accomplishment. When things weren't working out with your Mom you were able to secure a position with a very nice family.  I loved the fact that you were able to learn new recipes from the Jewish family.  I really felt bad about what they went through before coming to America.  I have a feeling that you were supposed to meet that family and experience what they had to offer to a young girl and in turn, you were able to help them. The one thing I didn't understand was the numbers on the couple.  What did it mean?

Interesting reading

So, they actually made an American movie about Hans Christian Andersen? Wow.

Well, actually he was/is famous all over the world. But while he was still alive, I'd suppose he was more famous around the world (China, especially) than he was in Denmark, his country of birth.
