Thank you for this excellent post. it appears that among other things, Conrad is demonstrating his view on the whether it is ever a better choice, a higher plane, to choose mistruth, a sin, over kindness and compassion, which is a moral obligation in a sense. Much more than that is the message but because it ends as it does, to me Conrad is saying that simple acts of kindness have no educational or social class level but they are indeed acts of class.  A bright and happy Diwali to you and yours!

I read this a couple times during my time in school. "Mistuh Kurtz, he dead."

What fascinates me is that English was Conrad's second language. He had a better command of English than most native speakers of it.
