Pat
That was something to not joke about - the facts are different, as I had posted previously. Our county thinks differently than it did then, but she was a model, and earned a good and honest wage. And the other many positive aspects of all of the Aunt Jemima models‘ lives should be celebrated. A thoughtful post.

until the time I came to Canada to live ...so I don't know if it is still happening but children were given Golliwog dolls to go to bed with. Not me but lots of children had them. I never thought a thing about them until I heard that when President Obama was going to Australia for a visit, they were quietly removed from the shelves of shops. So to me that says they were a slave doll they should never have been, they really didn't talk equality or love for one another. I am glad that I got a wake up call.

This is not so much a comment on his joke but what the family has said. The families involved have asked that this not be redone. It diminishes the women who helped create the brand (the cook) and the models who portrayed her.

I'm not familiar with Larry's Page but you have responded in the only right way. You are very observant and have such a good way of putting the emphasis where it belongs.

You are spot on. Minimizing the hidden issue is ignorance at its best.
This is not a time in our world where change is necessary to be making jokes about oppression no matter how innocent the material matter.
