It seems to me you are spot-on for most of humanity. There are some who will mentor; help, teach another to become more than him/herself, and in so doing don't realize that s/he has achieved and displayed an elevated spirit. The norm is of the Icarus mentality - and a resentfulness in seeing someone achieve something one could not achieve oneself.

It is, to me, a really ugly side of the normal Australian, to love to cut down a tall poppy. In other words, to applaud someone or a group of people on their hard climb to the top of their chosen field.... BUT, once they become World famed, to then make them into a house hold joke. Some really prominent Australians who have become world wide icons never go back to Australia where they are belittled.
