Farts
Hello Pat_B.
I came across this piece of yours by chance. It immediately brought to my mind a fairy tale I wrote not long ago for my nine-year old grandchildren (twins), in which the word 'fart' came up twice. When my daughter asked them what they liked best in the story they both chose the reference to fart, which made them laugh hysterically

My sister and I were not allowed to use the word "fart" when growing up either, like in Ruth's house. Mom did end up loosening up on it, though by the time high school came around.

Once when grandpa was over for Sunday dinner and everyone was gathered around, he leaned to one side and let one go. Son #1 couldn't let it pass and started singing "Grandpa did a cheek lift, Grandpa did a cheek lift." Grandpa laughed so hard he nearly fell off of the chair.

It would be fine with me if everyone got over the whole big dreadful deal over burps, top or bottom, and ignored them. Or, like Charlie, says "Gezundheit!"

Phart. One of those smelly little "silent-but-deadly" ads that pops up in one corner of the TV screen 30 seconds into the program, after you've already endured 5 ...

ALL rules are arbitrary, whether 'we' are the arbiters or 'they'. Manners are important - they're part of a collectivity's way to ease the frictions of human interaction. Their main element is or ought to be a consideration for others, and their sensitivities. I will speak differently to some old ladies at tea than to a bunch of guys on the squash court. Someone who doesn't know the difference is indeed 'uncultured'; and if he does but doesn't care he's just an asshole...Having said all that, jokes are a different matter - they're in a way 'time out'...

I hope you didn't mind me taking on your topic from the center. You sometimes bring me a memory that I feel might be interesting to share.

I have never had a problem with a bit of toilet humor ...in our family with the little ones we called them bottom Burps. Seemed to make a fart more normal, as they are. We just try not to do them in public.
Well we live isolated here, we are not young, Bottom burps are quite acceptable.

I always thought that scene was rather vulgar. Some of the kids at school seemed to be in that habit and usually said the the lad to them' Phew! you dirty bugger.'
