Re: Pat,
I always love 'inheriting' wonderful plantings! That's a great story, I am so glad the ancient lilac has remained. I wonder if the current owner knows the story.

Exploding gerbils would be just awful! I love lilacs, but the ones here flowered beautifully and are now gone. They have such a wonderful smell.

In the house where we raised our kids, some previous owner had
planted a lilac alongside the garage at the back of the lot. We pruned out the suckers that appeared at the roots each spring and otherwise let it grow - the bush was wider than three people could reach around, and the top branches and blooms cast shadows on the garage roof. Each spring it smelled heavenly. Turned out our next-door neighbor - who was then in his 90s, had owned the ground. He and his wife had brought the original cuttings with them from the family homestead when they first got married, maybe 70 years earlier. I've driven by the house a time or two. The new owner put up a privacy fence, now leaning and dilapidated - but the lilac rises above as always, blooming away.
