I have been wondering if we are going to see a major seasonal shift down the calender, where we no longer expect May to be lovely, but have shorter, later springs leading into hotter summers.

It seems the female is the more frisky of the two. But then, she is a lot younger. I have provided them a nesting box, just in case.

I'm very surprised one can't get Saltines in England.  I'm so used to them I thought they were everywhere.

Speculate? It was no secret to me from day 1.  That poor young girl in your story suffering from morning sickness. I knew there were no birth pills to be found alongside  a river bank.
