I don't think my kids ever had gerbils. I'm sure I'd remember.
I think I was brought up too close to the farm, where small rodents were defended against with cats and traps to ever think of gerbils or squirrels, etc. as pets. But I do see the fascination with their antics.

Yes, they have a lot more headroom in the new arrangement, and the water bottle hook is a bit short for it, so mountains are necessary. Mountain tunnels, really, without the actual mountains. I have to cut up mailing tubes to fit, but I use a serrated knife instead of my teeth.
