It certainly depends on the person. Some can figure things out themselves. Others need help. No shame either way.
I believe good works do play a role in eternal life. I feel they are a way to exercise one's faith.

All I know about the benefit of good works is what the Bible says about it, which is that your good works bring glory to our Heavenly Father. Eternal life is God's gift to those who believe Him and obey Him.
