I love your point about the difference between being smart and being experienced! I've met more than a few people who are book smart, but dumb as posts when it comes to any "real world" knowledge

There's nothing wrong with being around happy people.  I much prefer them to those who do nothing but act like debbie downers

I know what you mean about people being over eager. It seems to happen a lot at those big box stores.

Ciel

I hear what Justi means....it seems so hard to be nice these days.  It's so interesting how different parts of the country have different views of what is acceptable vs rude or possible patronizing, etc.  I got into a couple of discussions about slow vs. fast talking during Superstorm Sandy, for instance; this whole ma'am thing has made me think I might post something about it.  That was a cute comeback with the clerk.  Customer Service folks, unfortunately, so often are damned if they do and damned if they don't.  From her perspective, she probably says that - obvious to you as it might seem - because often people go stand at the register because they have a question to ask, or they go up there (this one always amazed me) to wait on someone else they are in the store with to bring whatever to the register where they agreed to meet.  But, just walking up and standing silently doesn't work......  It's the old, "you can please some of the people some of the time" and "everybody's a critic" combined.  Maybe it's always been so, just seems more so now.  And, of course, I find myself doing it, too!

I am 79 and I have never been insecure enough to feel patronized by others' attempts at being kind.

You're right, which is why I can joke about it. I dearly love it when I can

get that sudden look of surprise and a grin from someone, and maybe change up the dull normal just a smidge.
